I have never been to Vienna. I know its fame for classical music and empirical architecture. But what most attracts me there, is its popularity for international congress and conventions. Thus, when I heard that the WordCamp Europe 2016 will be hosted in the MuseumsQuartier of the Austrian capital, I did not think twice. I booked a flight and an Airbnb. I am now getting ready to leave, this Thursday.
Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll have too much time for tourism since I signed up as a Volunteer for the event. For two days I’ll be covering it on Twitter and Facebook. Yes, I am proud to have been selected to be part of the first communication team ever formed at the biggest European WordCamp. Indeed, this major event connects more than 2,000 WordPress fellows from all over Europe as well as from the rest of the world. So our job, as volunteers of the communication team, will be “to inform about important things and give them an overview of the most exciting stuff happening on the ground to the rest of the world.”
But that’s not all. On Sunday, we’ll all gather at the University of Vienna for the WordCamp Europe Contributor day. This event is a great way to show our love and to give back to the community. All day, we’ll be working on making WordPress better. Everybody has something he can contribute with. I signed up for Web Developement, Web Design, Translation and Marketing. So I guess I’ll be busy!
Anybody who’s involved with WordPress wants to be part of these WordCamps. They are great opportunities to meet people and start building collaborations. In fact, last year, at the WordCamp NYC in Brooklyn, I met with one of my now teammate at thecplab, Jeff Marx. This time, in Vienna, I plan to meet with Thomas Maier, the author of the great WP Advanced Ads Plugin. Yet, who knows who else I will run into!
